Created in 2015, the University of Montpellier (UM) is the result of the merger of Universities Montpellier 1 and 2, benefiting from the excellence of both institutions. UM brings together an extensive community of knowledge, from sciences, techniques, medicine and environmental sciences, to educational sciences, economics, law and political science.

Consequently, , it revives the multi-disciplinary ambition of the first university as a secular and international establishment created by order of Pope Nicholas IV in 1289 to teach medicine, law, literature and theology in Montpellier.

Over a period of eight centuries, renowned scholars and scientists, from Rabelais and Curie, to Renaudot, Chaptal and Grothendieck, have shaped a university deeply embedded with the city’s life and involved in the great challenges of its times.
