The Bibliothèque interuniversitaire de Montpellier (Service du patrimoine écrit et graphique), the Université de Montpellier and the Académie des Sciences et Lettres de Montpellier are offering an exhibition as an extension and complement to the colloquium "Sciences, Lumières et humanisme de d'Alembert à aujourd'hui" organized by the Académie on November 16 and 17, 2017.

Through the figure of d'Alembert, whose tercentenary will be celebrated in November 2017, the exhibition will evoke encyclopedism, the sciences and the arts, and will include a rich selection of old documents, scientific objects from the 18th to the 21st century, art drawings, etc. from the collections of Montpellier's universities, whose heritage is particularly rich in this field.

It will be organized in two parts:

  1. D'Alembert, the Encyclopédie and its posterity, the Montpellier encyclopedists and the Société royale des sciences, the great philosophers ;
  2. The birth of the branches of knowledge at the time of d'Alembert and the Encyclopédie: philosophy, art, botany, music, mechanics and astronomy.
