Infectious diseases are involved in 35% of deaths worldwide and are the leading cause of death in children and young adults. In addition, 17% of new cancer cases are thought to be caused by infectious agents. Infectious diseases research is therefore essential to better understand how an infectious agent multiplies within a living organism in order to prevent, treat and even cure diseases caused by these infections.
