Alexandre Grothendieck
Henri Escudier, a graduate of the École Normale Supérieure (SC), along with personal recollections from Jean-Paul Dufour, a former mathematics professor at the University of Montpellier and a longtime colleague of Alexandre Grothendieck.
The turbulent life of the great mathematician from Montpellier, Alexandre Grothendieck (1928–2014), a reflection of the upheavals ofthe 20th century…
According to the biography written by Henri Escudier and Jean-Paul Dufour: “He arrived in Montpellier in 1973 and had a son. He moved in with some hippies in a remote corner of the hamlet of Villecun, south of Lodève, to be close to nature—far enough from Montpellier to meditate in peace, yet close enough to commute to work on a moped and later in an old 2CV after he got his driver’s license. Justine left him, probably because she was bored there and hadn’t envisioned a life like that with an academic.”
