Chin Up! Photographic series by Hélène Jayet
Opening of the event by Philippe Augé, President of the University of Montpellier.

Deeply linked to Hélène Jayet's personal history, the Chin Up! project explores curly or frizzy hair as a territory for experimentation, struggle, but also identity affirmation. Initiated in 2009 and still ongoing, this work has developed over time in Paris, Lille, Marseille, and even Brazil.
In temporary studios set up in public spaces, the artist captures the individuality of the people photographed, with all types of hair, hairstyles, and styles.
With their chins raised, the subjects of this mosaic of portraits assert their presence and reclaim their image. A cartography of memory and Afro-descendant pride where generations, cultures, and styles intersect.
