Chin Up! A photo series by Hélène Jayet
Opening remarks by Philippe Augé, President of the University of Montpellier.

Deeply rooted in Hélène Jayet’s personal history, the Chin Up! project explores curly or kinky hair as a space for experimentation, struggle, and the assertion of identity. Launched in 2009 and still ongoing, this project has evolved over time in Paris, Lille, Marseille, and Brazil.
In pop-up studios set up in public spaces, the artist captures the individuality of the people photographed, featuring all types of hair, hairstyles, and styles.
With their chins held high, the subjects of this mosaic of portraits assert their presence and reclaim their image. A cartography of memory and Afro-descendant pride where generations, cultures, and styles intersect.
