What do boiling water, an epileptic seizure, walking becoming running or the extinction of an animal species have in common? All these changes are abrupt, occurring in very different situations, yet they share many common features. They are referred to as critical, sudden phenomena that seem elusive and unpredictable.
However, whether we're talking about physical, non-living phenomena, or biological, animate ones, these abrupt changes are signaled by early warning signs. These anticipatory clues are universal and common to the very diverse systems in which they appear.
Through numerous examples of this type of change, encountered in human and animal movements, in brain activity or in ecosystems, their astonishing commonalities will be identified.

UM Thursdays

The University of Montpellier, with its eight faculties, 6 institutes and one school, is bursting at the seams with teachers and researchers in a wide variety of fields. The University has decided to put the spotlight on them by offering a new series of lectures: the "Jeudis de l'UM".
They will take place once a month. Variety of themes / variety of venues: these events are designed as a journey through the UM's components, so that everyone can discover and exchange ideas on university themes that are accessible to all.
