UM atUM [S05-ep18]: Three Years of a Ph.D. Thesis Summarized in Three Minutes

This week on *AUM science*, doctoral students Jacintha Naby from the LMGC and Charles Sanctorum from the TransVIHMI laboratory give us an in-depth account of the “My Thesis in 180 Seconds” competition in which they participated. A program broadcast every Wednesday on the radio Divergence.

3 minutes, 180 seconds—that's how long it takes to:

  • brush your teeth effectively;
  • to hard-boil an egg;
  • apply a quick-setting cement;
  • to run a mile for Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj, the world record holder since 1998.

This is also the time required to:

  • beat 185 times for a healthy heart;
  • brew some green tea;
  • to listen to "Breath" by Pink Floyd;
  • to eat 21 hot dogs, a feat achieved by American Joey Chestnut, who is also a world record holder;
  • or: to summarize his thesis.

In any case, that’s the rule of the “My Thesis in 180 Seconds” competition, which has been held annually in France since 2014. The concept is simple: present your thesis in exactly 3 minutes using a single slide and in front of a lay audience. Humor plays a big role, as do references to popular culture.

Jacintha Naby, who wonthird prize from the jury for her thesis completed at the LMGC(Laboratory of Mechanics and Civil Engineering), and Charles Sanctorum, who is working on his thesis at the TransVIHMI laboratory for translational research on HIV and infectious diseases, are here to share their experiences with us.

Watch Jacintha Naby’s presentation titled “Contributing to the Study of Helical Piles for the Foundations of Temporary Structures in Marine Environments.”

Watch Charles Sanctorum’s presentation titled “Study of Viruses with Zoonotic Potential in Wild Great Ape Populations in Central Africa (DRC, Cameroon) and Assessment of Associated Transmission Risks.”

AtUM , you’ve got the schedule—let’s get started!
