Ceremony to award Oriol Amat an honorary doctorate from the University of Montpellier
On Wednesday, September 20, 2023, Philippe Augé, President of the University of Montpellier, will award an honorary doctorate from the University of Montpellier to Oriol Amat, professor of economics and former rector of Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona). The ceremony will take place at the Richter Student Center (MDE) starting at 11 a.m., in the presence of François Pierrot, Vice President in charge of international relations, Sylvie Sammut, Director of Montpellier Management (MOMA), Bernard Augé (MOMA), and Alexandre Vernhet, Vice President of the Board of Directors.

An influential economist

Oriol Amat began his academic career in 1980, specializing in financial accounting and management control. A professor of economics, he is now considered one of Catalonia's most influential economists thanks to his research in the fields of accounting fraud detection and key factors for business success. His books have been translated into many languages (English, French, Portuguese, Catalan, etc.) and his work has been published in academic journals such as the Journal of Business Ethics and the European Accounting Review.

During his career, which led him to become rector of Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Oriol Amat held numerous positions: director of the Center for Innovation and Learning, vice-rector for economics and information systems, head of the academic department of economics and business, dean of the UPF Barcelona School of Management (UPF Barcelona School of Management).
Although not affiliated with any political party, Oriol Amat nevertheless played an active role during the recent political crisis that hit Catalonia, serving on the boards of directors and advisory councils of several associations and institutions before becoming a member of the Parliament of Catalonia from 2015 to 2017.
What does the title "Doctor Honoris Causa" represent?
Created by decree on June 26, 1918, the origins of the honorary doctorate date back to the 17th century. It recognizes foreign figures who highlight and echo the values of the university through their contributions to the world of ideas, culture, arts, and sciences. Awarded during a formal ceremony, this academic title is the most distinguished and prestigious that can be conferred by the academic and scientific community.
