Shanghai ranking 2023: Université de Montpellier consolidates its position in the top 200
The University of Montpellier has confirmed its place among the world's top 200 universities in the Shanghai ranking published on August 15, 2023 by Jiao Tong University (Shanghai, China). Already recognized for the past 7 years as one of the world leaders in ecology, these good results demonstrate the University's ability to reach out to the rest of the world and meet international demands for excellence in research and training.
Highly anticipated every year, the Shanghai ranking list (also known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities) has been a global ranking of higher education establishments since 2003. An essential reference in the academic world, it ranks the world's top universities (from among 1,800 establishments) according to a unique index calculated on the basis of 6 quantitative criteria, including the number of publications in prestigious scientific journals(Nature and Science), the number of citations of researchers, the number of Nobel Prize winners in science and Fields medallists, the reputation of alumni and professors, etc. The Shanghai ranking lists the top 100 universities, and then ranks them in "brackets" of 50 up to the 200th position, then in brackets of 100 up to the 500th position, which closes the ranking.

The 2023 edition of the Shanghai ranking once again demonstrates the very positive overall dynamic of the UM, which is confirmed for the fifth year running in the 151-200 rank of the world's best universities. Since 2016, when the UM featured in the top 400, and by analyzing the results of this 2023 edition demonstrate that the University of Montpellier, thanks in particular to its I-SITE Excellence program, is a major player in Higher Education, Research and Innovation in France.

In addition to these good results in the Shanghai rankings, the UM also stands out in a number of international rankings.
In THE Ranking Impact: "Times Higher Education", the UM is in first place among French establishments, and in the overall ranking among the 101-200 best establishments worldwide. The UM is in the world's top 100 for 4 Sustainable Development Goals, and in first place in France for two of them, linked to the establishment's major themes: food, care and protection. It is the leading French establishment for goals relating to health, well-being and the reduction of inequalities, as well as the leading French establishment for the goal relating to aquatic life.
The University of Montpellier maintains its status in the CWTS Leiden Ranking. This ranking, which provides important information on the scientific performance of over 1,500 major universities worldwide, is based on scientific publications and their citations. In the 2023 world ranking of most cited publications (+10%), published on June 21, the University of Montpellier has moved up 3 places compared with 2022, from 7th to4th place among the 30 French universities listed. It is also the country'sNo. 1 university in the "Life and Earth Sciences" field, in terms of both total number of publications and the "Top10%" criterion. This remarkable national positioning is also reflected on a European scale: the University of Montpellier is in 9th place for the volume of publications (12th for the "Top10%") in the "Life and Earth Sciences" field, and 59th (54th for the "Top10%") for all scientific fields combined.
