2026 Shanghai Ranking: TheUM Confirms Its Place Among the World’s Top 200 Universities
The University of Montpellier has once again confirmed its place among the world’s top 200 universities in the Shanghai General Ranking (Academic Ranking of World Universities – ARWU), published on August 15, 2026, by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China). This latest recognition underscores the strength of its scientific and academic strategy, as well as its international influence, driven by high-level research and an ambitious policy on education and innovation.
Eagerly anticipated each year, the Shanghai Ranking has been considered one of the world’s leading benchmarks for higher education since 2003. It evaluates more than 1,800 institutions worldwide based on several indicators of scientific excellence, including publications in the most prestigious international journals, the most-cited researchers, international scientific awards, and overall research performance. The top 100 universities are ranked individually, then in groups of 50 up to the top 200, and in groups of 100 up to the top 500.
A commitment to excellence that endures over time
The 2026 edition confirms the University of Montpellier’s enduring place among the world’s leading institutions. Since entering the top 400 in 2016, the “UM ” has gradually strengthened its position, eventually breaking into the global top 200—a ranking it has now maintained year after year. Beyond the Shanghai Ranking, the University of Montpellier has reaffirmed its standing in several major international rankings.
In 2026, theUM , stood out in TIME Magazine’s “World’s Top Universities” ranking, where it ranked 244th globally. It became the top French university outside of Paris and the third-ranked French university overall, thereby confirming the excellence of its research, its academic programs, and its international appeal.
The University of Montpellier also retains its top spot among French universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, which highlight institutions’ commitment to sustainable development. Ranked in the global top 101–200, it is notably among the global top 30 for the Sustainable Development Goals “Good Health and Well-being” and “Life Below Water,” illustrating the consistency of its commitment to major societal challenges.
