Artists Take Over the University

The University of Montpellier is kicking off the new academic year with a rich artistic program, welcoming choreographer Leonardo Montecchia, visual artist Armelle Caron, and illustrator Ganaëlle Maury, who will create a site-specific work at the Faculty of Education.

The residency of the Cie de la Mentira, hosted by the University of Montpellier in 2015–2016 and co-funded by the DRAC Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées, has been extended this fall.

Three performances of his show (In)Utile: Beyond Utility are scheduled for November

  • November 21, Nîmes University Institute of Technology (IUT)
  • 11/22 STAPS / EuroMov
  • November 24: Béziers IUT (as part of IUT Night)

as well as four workshop-style sessions that combine two approaches to the body and movement—one artistic, the other scientific. They will take place in October and November at EuroMov and will be led in pairs with Professors

  • Tuesday, November 8: Resonant Spaces in the Body
  • Tuesday, Nov. 15: Breathing / Movement

The School of Education is hosting this artist from September through November for the creation of a site-specific work on the walls of the cultural space: *Drawing in Progress / I Love You Now*.

The “work in progress” takes center stage: students, staff, and the general public will be able to watch this charcoal drawing being created during specific time slots.

  • From September 19 to October 5, the artist will be drawing on the walls “live”
  • From October 6 to 22, the cultural center will host an exhibition and return to a more traditional role

During the performance, the Cultural Center is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; during the exhibition, it is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Visual artist Armelle Caron: 2016–2017 “Graphic Arts” Artist-in-Residence

Armelle CaronSelected for the 2016–2017 residency program focused on graphic design, she will work specifically with the School of Education, the School of Economics and Business Administration, ISEM, and certain departments within the School of Sciences (Computer Science, Mathematics, etc.).

The exhibition will take place in the spring of 2017, and throughout the year, drawing workshops related to the artist’s creative process and/or the residency project will be organized. These workshops will be open to students and staff atUM.
