TheUM is strengthening its scientific partnerships with universities in northern and northeastern Brazil
At the invitation of the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), the University of Montpellier hosted a delegation of leaders from universities and research organizations in northern and northeastern Brazil on September 8. The meeting was intended to strengthen existing collaborations and open up new opportunities in research, education, and innovation.
On September 8, presidents of federal universities, directors of research institutes, and the president of CAPES—a major Brazilian organization supporting higher education and research—were welcomed at the University of Montpellier. These institutions aim to strengthen their network and develop international scientific collaborations capable of addressing the major environmental and societal challenges facing the North and Northeast regions of Brazil.
As a major partner in scientific cooperation with countries in the Global South, the IRD plays a leading role in this effort. The visit gave delegation members the opportunity to meet with representatives from the University of Montpellier and several joint research units at the site to take stock of existing collaborations and identify new areas for cooperation.
Land use, forest and water resource management, mining pollution, infectious disease prevention, migration, human rights, reducing inequality, and social change: there are many shared themes that illustrate the diversity of expertise available within the Montpellier ecosystem.
Beyond scientific exchanges, this meeting aims to establish long-term partnerships centered on jointly developed projects that combine research and training and are based on a shared goal: to generate useful knowledge and develop solutions tailored to major environmental and social transformations.
