Welcome to the University of Montpellier’s page dedicated to environmental issues and social responsibility! Legacy and Commitment: A Tradition of Progress The University of Montpellier boasts more than 800 years of science and innovation. In keeping with this tradition, the University has been committed to and actively engaged in environmental and social issues for many years. TheUM ’s ongoing commitment is recognized both nationally and internationally, whether through the THE Impact Rankings—in which the University ranks first nationally in “health and well-being”—or the prestigious Shanghai Ranking, which highlights research and teaching quality in ecology, water management, and agriculture. A Large-Scale Effort The University’s commitment is firmly centered on people. Internally, this is reflected in the adaptation of its curriculum to contemporary challenges, as well as in the implementation of numerous initiatives—for both students and staff—that promote inclusivity, equality, and diversity, among other goals. This commitment permeates the institution and its entire community through the development of several framework documents focused on the ecological transition and social responsibility, each with its own scope and objectives. The implementation of the action plans stemming from these strategic documents requires, on the one hand, a strong grasp of various fields—social, societal, and ecological—and, on the other hand, a substantial investment aligned with the recommendations of organizations such as the Ministry, the IPCC, the High Council for Climate, and sustainability and social responsibility (SD&SR) frameworks. Far from being merely financial, these investments are, above all, human. Indeed, these frameworks and plans cannot stand on their own; it is the University’s entire community that brings them to life and implements them. From project leaders to the users of these initiatives, the entire community plays a vital role in achieving the set objectives. This shared vision is championed by the “UM ,” which promotes, shares, and constantly develops it by supporting staff in developing social and environmental skills. The goal is to foster a culture of curiosity and learning that extends beyond the university-student relationship and permeates every level of the organization. Beyond the University Externally, theUM contributes to the dissemination of knowledge by organizing conferences, debates, events, and exhibitions open to schoolchildren and the general public. As a public institution, theUM seizes every opportunity to strengthen the ties between science and society. In the face of future challenges, this connection is essential for ensuring that society benefits from the advances, knowledge, and innovations developed by the University of Montpellier and its laboratories. That is why the university actively promotes responsible research and is committed to enriching its curricula by integrating the challenges of ecological transition and sustainable development. In this way, the University trains tomorrow’s leaders to better address the social, societal, and environmental realities of our time. Education is a cornerstone of how our societies function, and the University is proud to promote high-quality programs and instruction firmly rooted in the challenges of today and tomorrow. Beyond academic programs, the University also seeks to foster curiosity wherever it arises—particularly during moments of exchange and dialogue between researchers and civil society—which the “UM ” promotes by organizing various events that serve as opportunities to strengthen and sustain the ties between science and society.
