The brain is one of the most complex organs in the human body. Cerebral activity involves several brain areas with different functions, working as a unit and coordinated via thousands of connections.

We can ask ourselves what a thought is, this invisible thing produced without interruption by our brain, where it comes from, what its path is and whether it can be controlled.

The prefrontal cortex, a sophisticated control center with multiple interactions with different brain regions, is thought to be heavily involved: it coordinates the circuits that generate sensory and emotional information, as well as thought.

Certain neurological diseases and psychic disorders can lead to thought disorders, resulting in dysfunction, distortion and disorder.
Mental techniques are commonly used to harness the power of thought. Meditation practices, in particular, have superpowers on our brains and therapeutic effects recognized by neuroscientists.

This science-society debate, part of Brain Week, brings together 3 scientists and specialists on the subject:

  • Angela Biancofiore, University Professor at Université Paul Valéry de Montpellier, researcher in Human and Social Sciences
  • Arnaud Cachia, Professor of Neuroscience at Paris-Descartes University, Member of the Institut Universitaire de France (neuroscience specialty)
  • Déborah Ducasse, Psychiatrist and psychotherapist at Montpellier University Hospital
