The brain is one of the most complex organs in the human body. Brain activity involves several areas of the brain that have different functions and work together in a unified and coordinated manner via thousands of connections.
We may wonder what a thought is, this invisible thing produced continuously by our brain, ask ourselves where it comes from, how it develops, and whether it can be controlled.
The prefrontal cortex, a sophisticated control center that interacts with various regions of the brain, appears to play a significant role: it coordinates the circuits responsible for sensory and emotional information, as well as thought processes.
Certain neurological diseases and mental disorders can cause thought disorders, leading to dysfunctions, distortions, and disorders.
Mental techniques are commonly used to control the power of thought. Meditation practices, in particular, have superpowers over our brains and therapeutic effects recognized by neuroscientists.
This science-society debate, which is part of Brain Awareness Week, brings together three scientists and specialists on the subject:
- Angela Biancofiore, Professor at Paul Valéry University in Montpellier, researcher in humanities and social sciences
- Arnaud Cachia, Professor of Neuroscience at Paris-Descartes University, Member of the Institut Universitaire de France (specializing in neuroscience)
- Déborah Ducasse, Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist at Montpellier University Hospital
