The brain is one of the most complex organs in the human body. Brain activity involves several regions of the brain that perform different functions and work together in a unified and coordinated manner through thousands of connections.
One might wonder what a thought is—this invisible phenomenon constantly produced by our brain—and ask where it comes from, how it develops, and whether it can be controlled.
The prefrontal cortex, that sophisticated control center which interacts extensively with various regions of the brain, is believed to play a significant role: it acts as a coordinator of the neural circuits responsible for sensory and emotional information, as well as for thought.
Certain neurological diseases and mental disorders can cause cognitive impairments, leading to dysfunction, distortions, and disorders.
Mental techniques are commonly used to harness the power of thought. Meditation practices, in particular, have a powerful effect on our brains and therapeutic benefits recognized by neuroscientists.
This science-society debate, held as part of Brain Awareness Week, brings together three scientists and experts on the subject:
- Angela Biancofiore, Full Professor at Paul Valéry University in Montpellier, researcher in the Humanities and Social Sciences
- Arnaud Cachia, Professor of Neuroscience at Paris-Descartes University, Member of the Institut Universitaire de France (specializing in neuroscience)
- Déborah Ducasse, psychiatrist and psychotherapist at Montpellier University Hospital
