Personalized medicine, or precision medicine, involves tailoring treatments to the characteristics of patients and their diseases. There are many concrete advantages to this approach, as it amounts to moving from a one-size-fits-all approach—or standard treatment—to a customized approach, determined by the patient's genetic and environmental profile.

The definition of personalized medicine thus refers to the ability provided by genomic tools to choose a treatment for a given patient based on their individual characteristics. It is the ability to classify each patient into a subpopulation that differs in its susceptibility to a particular disease or in its response to a given treatment, which is a significant aid in choosing a treatment.

This science-society debate is part of Pint of Science will be moderated by:

  • Alain Thierry – INSERM Research Director at the Montpellier Research Institute (IRCM) – Research for personalized medicine in digestive oncology;
  • Isabelle Touitou – Professor at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine and Biotherapies. Head of the Rare and Autoinflammatory Diseases Laboratory.
