Conference: “Montpellier and Science: A Prestigious Past, an Asset for the Future”

Abstract

Montpellier has always played an important role in the history of science. It owes this to its university—one of the oldest in Europe (1289)—to its diverse and prestigious schools, to its laboratories and research centers, and thus to the long-recognized quality of its ever-evolving teams of professors, researchers, and engineers.
Initially driven by its medical school, the city’s scientific influence has, over the centuries, expanded to encompass all disciplines. Botany, agronomy, chemistry, pharmacology, physics, civil engineering, hydraulics, biology, electronics, mathematics…  The list is long—it includes numerous fields and the great historical figures from Montpellier who have contributed to the development of science and technology. This rich history deserves to be better known and highlighted.
Encouraged by this prestigious past, the present and future of science in Montpellier continue to strive for excellence.
