School of Education, Lecture Hall H, Montpellier
A lecture led by Brigitte Louichon, professor of French language and literature at the School of Education at the University of Montpellier.
“But why on earth teach literature in elementary school?”
For two centuries, children’s literature—whether or not it is specifically labeled “youth literature”—has been rich in masterpieces. It constitutes a universe in which themes, characters, situations, and images constantly interact. This imaginary world complements the real world and helps us understand it better.
But in this digital and multimedia age, when there is so much knowledge to acquire, so many skills to build, and so many abilities to develop, why on earth should we still—or additionally—make children read? What is the point of that today?
This lecture is intended for the general public. It will highlight the key issues in this field of education in light of current challenges and provide a glimpse into what happens in literature classes.
“UM Thursdays”: a new series of lectures
With its eight faculties, two schools, and six institutes, the University of Montpellier boasts a wealth of instructors andProfessors a wide range of academic disciplines.
