International Conference: “Cultural Policies in Europe: A Participatory Turn?”

Be SpectACTive! A European network for active spectatorship

• Is “participation” a central theme in cultural policies everywhere?
• What forms does it take—geographically, by sector, and politically?
• How do cultural policies, at various levels of action, address this concept?
• What kind of participation are we talking about? Participation in creation, programming, or decision-making?
• Who is involved in what, how, and why?
• What are the tools and paradigms of participation?
• How does participation contribute to debates on democratization and cultural democracy?
• What do cultural operators expect from a cultural policy aimed at increasing participation?

Roundtable discussions, presentations, and workshops will bring together cultural practitioners, researchers, and public policymakers from more than 15 European countries to address these challenges and questions.

This conference is organized as part of the Be SpectACTive! network (a project supported by the European Union’s Creative Europe program), with support from the Ministry of Culture, Occitanie en Scène, the Occitanie Region, the University of Montpellier, and the CNRS.
