The next evening in the 2019 "Les conférences des jeudis" series will be hosted by Dominique Bernard, lecturer at the University of Rennes 1, and Audrey Théron, museum collections officer at the Historical Heritage Department of the University of Montpellier.

This lecture will take you on a journey to Brittany to discover the scientific collections of the Rennes Faculty of Science (1840-1900), through the work of Dominique Bernard, lecturer at the University of Rennes 1.

Grab your umbrella - it's going to rain with stories, big and small, about science and technology!

If the names Heron of Alexandria, Abbé Rochon, François Arago, Félix Dujardin, Faustino Malaguti and Auguste Morren mean nothing to you, it's time to tackle the book Un trésor scientifique redécouvert. La collection d'instruments scientifiques de la Faculté des sciences de Rennes (1840-1900) written by Dominique Bernard, retired (but very active) lecturer at the University of Rennes 1 and published by Rennes en sciences.

In 255 pages of his book, the author describes the history of the Rennes Faculty of Science since its creation and its collections of scientific instruments, in particular the inventions of Léon Foucault, Pierre, Jacques and Marie Curie and Pierre Weiss, with photographs, archives and cartoons by Nono. A didactic and funny book that the author will present at the conference.

At his side is Audrey Théron, in charge of museum collections at the Historical Heritage Department of the University of Montpellier, who crossed paths with Dominique Bernard on the benches of the PATSTEC mission meetings. This is precisely what our collection manager will be presenting to you, as she introduces you to this mission with its bizarre name. Safeguarding contemporary scientific and technical heritage at a university: why? how? Supported by the Musée des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) in Paris and the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, this program aims to preserve the memory of a little-known heritage.

Two perspectives, two universities, one goal: to remember the evolution of science and technology.

"Thursday lectures

The University of Montpellier, with its eight Faculties, two Schools, 6 Institutes and 78 research structures, is bursting at the seams with teaching and research staff in a wide variety of fields.

She wanted to highlight them and make them accessible to as many people as possible by offering a series of conferences.
