The Montpellier Interuniversity Library (Written and Graphic Heritage Department), the University of Montpellier, and the Montpellier Academy of Sciences and Letters are hosting an exhibition to extend and complement the symposium "Science, Enlightenment, and Humanism from d'Alembert to Today" organized by the Academy on November 16 and 17, 2017.
Seeking to evoke, through the figure of d'Alembert, whose tercentenary will be marked in November 2017, encyclopedism, science, and the arts, the exhibition will include a rich selection of ancient documents, scientific objects from the 18th to the 21st century, art drawings, etc. from the collections of the universities of Montpellier, whose heritage is particularly rich in this field.
It will be organized into two parts:

  1. D'Alembert, the Encyclopédie and its legacy, the Montpellier encyclopedists and the Royal Society of Sciences, the great philosophers;
  2. The emergence of branches of knowledge in the era of d'Alembert and the Encyclopédie: philosophy, art, botany, music, mechanics, and astronomy.
