Arriving at UM in September 2016, visual artist Armelle Caron explored the theme of "graphics" through meetings and exchanges with UM students and staff, particularly at the Faculty of Science.
Looking for the edge presents the various artistic approaches chosen by the artist to explore this theme in light of the UM's training and research disciplines. More broadly, she has poetically and simply repurposed existing materials within the university, such as diagrams and drawings used in classes, campus maps, etc. The works also raise questions: what constitutes art? What are the points of connection between the approaches of artists and scientists?
Armelle Caron offers us "an inventory of what constitutes drawing without being, at first glance, a visual inquiry": "technical drawings (...) but also maps, diagrams, and graphs." Exploring the boundaries of these categories provides some answers and raises just as many questions...
