Predatory publishers

The Open Science and Research Support team at theUM is continuing its series of webinars on open science!

These webinars cover various topics related to open science, scientific publications, research data, and digital identifiers.

They take place every other Tuesday, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and include a presentation (lasting 20 to 40 minutes) followed by a discussion.

The webinar on March 18, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., will focus on the topic “Predatory Publishers.”

With the widespread adoption of Open Access, two competing business models have emerged: the diamond model (free for both the author and the reader) and the APC model (publication fees paid by the author or their institution). Unfortunately, the latter has led to a proliferation of so-called “predatory” publishers. With little regard for the scientific quality of the articles they publish, they represent a trap that researchers must avoid at all costs.  

This presentation will focus on publishers considered predatory or operating in a “gray area,” the phenomenon of predatory conferences, and, finally, the emerging issue of paper mills, which are facilitated by artificial intelligence. This webinar will provide an opportunity to introduce you to the tools and best practices you need to protect yourself against these threats.
