Action #1 I am Rosa Parks is the first installment in a series of four performances titled Action(s) and conceived by Fanny Rudelle and Vanessa Liautey.
“I am Rosa Parks…” Fanny Rudelle, a white woman born 20 years after the Montgomery bus incident, begins with these words.
She wears this symbol as a defiant gesture toward history, as a way of saying that we can all fight against injustice and that it is not the exclusive right of one people over another.
To discriminate is to separate. Today, we stand together in this fight against racial discrimination. She tells us how the shift occurred—from anonymity to becoming a symbol—and how that fateful night on the Cleveland Avenue bus on December 1, 1955, changed her forever and altered the course of history. “Everyone should live their life as a role model for others,” Rosa Parks tells us. Being Rosa Parks is within reach for all of us.
