The presentation traces the history of oyster farming in the region: “From the classrooms of the small school in Castries to the presidency of the Academy of Sciences, the eclectic career of Jacques Marie Cyprien Victor Coste (1807–1873) spanned the 19th century.  His career was a succession of opportunities born of his open, curious, and practical mind, and embodies a path marked by discretion and modesty, crowned with success. His life, devoted to science and innovation, is summed up in the epitaph engraved on his commemorative plaque: ‘His life was nothing but a long day’s work devoted to Science and useful discoveries.’”
