Today in France, 3.3 million French men and women are directly affected by infertility. 1 in 4 couples are unable to conceive (according to a report commissioned by the French Ministry of Health, published in February 2022). Infertility, which is caused by environmental, biological and medical factors, is a burden on public health, and on women's health in particular, calling for societal as well as medical responses.

Although medically assisted procreation offers immense hope to those who wish to have a child, it does not always enable them to become parents. Fertilization retains its share of mystery and uncertainty. The chance of life retains its rights, and no technique has total control over the outcome of a pregnancy project.

To discuss this science and society topic, three multidisciplinary experts will be on hand to answer questions from the audience:

  • Dr Nicolas Chevalier, gynecologist-obstetrician, reproductive medicine at the Saint-Roch Montpellier AMP center. Former president of the Société de Médecine de la Reproduction.
  • Prof. Samir Hamamah, Head of the Reproductive Biology Department at Montpellier University Hospital.
  • Chrystelle Tutunovic, clinical psychologist in practice.

The Bar des sciences has become one of Montpellier's flagship events for scientific culture, offering once a month, from January to June, a participatory and civic debate on all aspects of science. Throughout the season, scientists are invited to engage in a dialogue in which their knowledge and practices are not only shared, but also discussed.

The season is co-produced by the UM's scientific culture services and its partners: INRAE, INSERM and IRD.
