Today in France, 3.3 million French men and women are directly affected by infertility. One in four couples is unable to conceive (according to a report commissioned by the Ministry of Health, published in February 2022). Driven by environmental, biological, and medical factors, infertility weighs heavily on public health, particularly that of women, calling for societal as well as medical responses.

While assisted reproductive technology offers immense hope to people who want to have children, it does not always enable them to become parents. Fertilization remains shrouded in mystery and uncertainty. The vagaries of life still prevail, and no technique can completely guarantee the success of a pregnancy.

To discuss this topic of science and society, three multidisciplinary experts will answer questions from the audience live:

  • Dr. Nicolas Chevalier, gynecologist-obstetrician , reproductive medicine at the AMP Saint-Roch Montpellier center. Former president of the Society for Reproductive Medicine.
  • Professor Samir Hamamah, Head of Reproductive Biology at Montpellier University Hospital.
  • Chrystelle Tutunovic, clinical psychologist in private practice.

The Science Bar has become one of Montpellier's flagship scientific culture events, offering a monthly participatory public debate on all aspects of science from January to June. Throughout the season, scientists are invited to engage in a dialogue where their knowledge and practices are shared, but also open to discussion.

The season is co-produced by the scientific culture departments of the University of Montpellier and its partners: INRAE, INSERM, and IRD.

Practical information:

  • Free admission, subject to availability.
