This week in A l'UM la science, Marie-Liesse Doublet of theICGM reveals the secrets of our batteries. Our report takes you to the geochemistry platform with Michaël Bonno, a researcher at GM. And to start things off, we'd like to wish you a very Happy New Year, and hope that the festive season has helped you recharge your batteries for a healthy start to 2023! To reconnect you smoothly, this back-to-school show is all about batteries. Phones, computers, tablets, toothbrushes, razors, games consoles, cameras, lawnmowers, vacuum cleaners, drills and now scooters, bikes and cars... The list of battery-powered devices has grown steadily over the last few decades, to the point where plugging and unplugging a charger is now part of our daily routine. But have you ever wondered how a battery works? What happens when it charges? Discharge? What magical processes are behind that little picture of a battery being charged? That's the question we're tackling today.

In fact, a team of researchers from Collège de France, CNRS, Université Rennes 1 and Université de Montpellier have developed a new method for seeing live inside a commercial battery. It may not look like it, but this is a major first, and the study has been published in Nature Energy.

Our guest is Marie-Liesse Doublet, a researcher at the Charles Gerhardt Institute in Montpellier and, of course, a member of this team. She is also a member of the latest class of winners of the French Academy of Sciences awards.

In the second half of the show, we're off to Geosciences Montpellier, and more specifically to the geochemistry platform where Michaël Bonno goes back in time to reconstruct the history of the Earth.

Finally, our last-minute guest is Aurélie Lieuvin, communications manager at CNRS Occitanie-Est, who will be presenting the 2023 CNRS Café & Vidéo season. The premiere takes place on January 19 and is not to be missed.
