A l'UM la science [S02-ep21] : Living with industrial pollution

This week in A l'UM la science, Christelle Gramaglia, sociologist at the G-Eau laboratory, presents her book Habiter la pollution industrielle. Expériences et métrologies citoyennes de la contamination. Broadcast on Divergence FM 93.9 every Wednesday at 6pm.

Today, we take a look back at a memory. On the night of September 25-26, 2019, a major fire broke out at the Lubrizol plant in Rouen, France (France Info), immediately reviving the painful trauma of AZF. That night, 5,000 tonnes of chemicals went up in smoke as local residents watched in horror and disbelief. A harsh spotlight on the threat posed by the chemical industry. But what about those sites where no disaster attracts attention? How do you build your daily life when you live near polluting industries? How do we live with these potentially toxic chemical residues? What strategies do we develop to protect ourselves? And why do we stay in these dangerous areas? These are just some of the questions our guest investigated through a series of groundbreaking surveys in France, Spain and Portugal. Christelle Gramaglia is a sociologist at INRAE's G-eau laboratory, where she has been studying the social and ecological consequences of chronic contamination, in an original and fascinating book entitled Habiter la pollution industrielle. Expériences et métrologies citoyennes de la contamination, published by Presse des Mines in January 2023.
