Agnès Fichard-Caroll and Nadine Houédé have been named Knights of the Legion of Honor

In the January 1, 2023, honors list, Agnès Fichard-Carroll and Nadine Houédé, both professors at the University of Montpellier, were awarded the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor.

Agnès Fichard-Carroll is Vice President of the University of Montpellier, responsible for academic programs and campus life. She is primarily a professor of neuroscience in the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Montpellier.

Nadine Houédé is a university professor and hospital practitioner in oncology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Montpellier and at the Nîmes University Hospital. She is also the director of the Cancéropôle Grand Sud-Ouest.

An honorary and prestigious title

The Legion of Honor is the foremost national order established to honor French citizens. It is the highest distinction. It recognizes outstanding service rendered to the nation, whether in civilian life or in the military.

To be eligible for the Legion of Honor, you must meet the following three requirements:

  • the person in question must have demonstrated outstanding merit through at least 20 years of service in the public interest and for the benefit of the nation;
  • The individual must be nominated by a minister, following a review of a dossier compiled at the request of a central government agency, a prefect, an association, a political figure (mayor, member of Congress, etc.), or a group of at least 50 people (in the case of a citizens’ initiative);
  • The proposal must be approved by the Council of the Order of the Legion of Honor, chaired by the Grand Chancellor.
