NTU Rankings 2023: Montpellier University ranks highly in France and internationally!

Published on September1, 2023, the NTU rankings measure the performance of universities around the world based on the volume and quality of their scientific publications. These rankings placed the University of Montpellier asthe 4th best institution in France and127th worldwide.

The "Performance ranking of scientific papers for world universities," also known as NTU, is published annually by National Taiwan University (NTU). It compares the scientific performance of universities worldwide based on academic publications and three criteria: research productivity, research impact, and research excellence. This year, NTU is publishing the overall performance rankings (top 1,000), as well as six field-specific rankings and 27 subject-specific rankings (top 100 and top 500).

The University of Montpellier ranks among the top four in France and the top 127 worldwide in the NTU world university ranking. It also performs remarkably well in subject-specific rankings by discipline and research topic.

UM stands out in various international rankings

The 2023 edition of the Shanghai ranking once again demonstrates the very positive overall momentum of UM, which has been confirmed for the fifth consecutive year in the 151-200 range of the world's best universities. This represents steady progress since 2016, when the UM was ranked in the top 400. These strong results demonstrate the important place that the University of Montpellier occupies in the French higher education, research, and innovation landscape, thanks in particular to its I-SITE Excellence program.

In the THE Impact Ranking: Times Higher Education, UM ranks first among French institutions and is listed among the top 101-200 institutions worldwide. The UM is in the global top 100 for four sustainable development goals and ranks first in France for two of them, in line with the institution's major themes: feeding, caring for, and protecting. It is the leading French institution for goals related to health, well-being, and reducing inequalities, as well as the leading French institution for the goal related to aquatic life.

The University of Montpellier maintains its position in the CWTS Leiden Ranking. This ranking, which provides important information on the scientific performance of more than 1,500 leading universities worldwide, is based on scientific publications and their citations by other researchers. In the 2023 global ranking of the most cited publications (+10%), published on June 21, the University of Montpellier moved up three places compared to 2022, rising from7th to4th place among the 30 French universities listed. It is also theleading university in the country in the field of "life and earth sciences," both in terms of total number of publications and the "Top 10%" criterion. This remarkable national ranking is reflected at the European level: the University of Montpellier ranks9th in terms of publication volume (12th for the "Top 10%") in the field of "life and earth sciences," and59th (54th for the "Top 10%") across all scientific fields.

According to Reuters' ranking of the most innovative universities, the University of Montpellier is the top French university and ranks 17th in Europe.
