Conference at the University of Montpellier: “Autism and gender: let’s change our perspective!”

On World Autism Awareness Day and during the annual "Donner des Elles à l'UM" event, the University of Montpellier wanted to bring together the themes of autism and gender in a unique conference. Open to all, it will take place on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, from 12:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the Dumontet amphitheater on the Triolet campus and will also be accessible remotely.

Understanding an intersection that is still too little known

Hosted by Julie Dachez, doctor of social psychology, author, and science communicator, this conference aims to link scientific research and real-life experiences by taking an engaged and informed look at autism. She wants to highlight the decisive influence of social norms on the obstacles faced by autistic people, particularly women.

The speaker will seek to explain what contributes to the underdiagnosis of women, why many of them develop coping strategies, and how these mechanisms profoundly affect their mental health. This will be an opportunity to gain a more accurate, respectful, and deeply human understanding of neurodiversity.

UM committed to gender equality and the inclusion of neuroatypical individuals

As a place of education, research, and civic engagement, the University of Montpellier places equality and diversity at the heart of its mission. Long committed to these issues, it holds the Afnor Alliance label for "Gender Equality and Diversity," which recognizes structured and sustainable work in support of these issues. In 2024, UM signed the Atypie-Friendly charter and is participating in the associated program, which aims to make higher education institutions more inclusive for students with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs).

Through the actions carried out throughout the year, the University of Montpellier aims to stimulate reflection and encourage awareness. These opportunities for discussion and awareness-raising contribute to breaking down gender stereotypes and building a university environment conducive to the fulfillment of each and every individual, where differences are valued and everyone's talents are fully recognized.

This event is supported by the Handiversité and Quality of Life at Work departments of the Campus Life Division as part of the Multi-Year Disability Master Plan (SDPH) and the UM's Gender Equality Plan.
