Conference at the University of Montpellier: “Autism and Gender: Let’s Change Our Perspective!”

To mark World Autism Awareness Day and the annual“Donner des Elles à l’UM” event, the University of Montpellier has organized a special conference bringing together the themes of autism and gender. Open to everyone, it will take place on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, from 12:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the Dumontet Auditorium on the Triolet campus and will also be available online.

Understanding an intersection that is still too little known

Led by Julie Dachez, a doctor of social psychology, author, and science communicator, this lecture aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and personal experiences by offering an engaged and informed perspective on autism. She seeks to highlight the decisive influence of social norms on the barriers faced by people with autism, particularly women.

The speaker will seek to explain what contributes to the underdiagnosis of women, why many of them develop coping strategies, and how these mechanisms profoundly affect their mental health. This will be an opportunity to gain a more accurate, respectful, and deeply human understanding of neurodiversity.

The UM is committed to gender equality and the inclusion of neurodivergent individuals

As a center for education, research, and civic engagement, the University of Montpellier places equality and diversity at the heart of its mission. With a longstanding commitment to these issues, it holds the AFNOR Alliance “Gender Equality and Diversity” certification, which recognizes structured and sustainable efforts to advance these goals. In 2024, UM signed the Atypie-Friendly charter and participates in the associated program, which aims to make higher education institutions more inclusive for students with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD).

Through initiatives carried out throughout the year, the University of Montpellier aims to stimulate reflection and raise awareness. These opportunities for dialogue and awareness-raising help break down gender stereotypes and foster a university environment conducive to the personal growth of every individual, where differences are celebrated and everyone’s talents are fully recognized.

This event is organized by the Handiversité and Workplace Quality of Life units of the Campus Life Division as part of the University of Marseille’s Multi-Year Disability Action Plan (SDPH) and Gender Equality Plan.
