Where Do I Come From, Where Am I Going? : Screening of short films on cultural diversity at the School of Education on the Carcassonne campus

Throughout the 2023–2024 academic year, students and staff at the Carcassonne campus of the University of Montpellier’s Faculty of Education watched, discussed, and selected short films on the theme of cultural diversity as part of a workshop led by the KOVisuel association. On Thursday, March 28, 2024, at 8:00 p.m., the selected films will be screened at the CGR-Le Colisée movie theater in Carcassonne during an evening event hosted by the students and staff who participated in the workshop.

A "Short Film Programming" Workshop

From October 2023 to March 2024, 15 students and staff members from the Carcassonne Faculty of Education participated in a workshop on programming short films on the theme of cultural diversity. Each month, Jacob Redman from the film education association KOVisuel provided them with a shortlist of short films. The participants analyzed, discussed, and defended their favorite films, listened to each other’s arguments, and reached a consensus to propose a rich and varied final selection to present to the general public.

A Theme: Cultural Diversity

This year, all the short films explore the theme of cultural diversity. Moving beyond stereotypes and preconceived notions, the filmmakers invite us to take a thoughtful look at the life journeys of women, men, and children who, drawing on their rich histories and cultures, are building a society together. Through an artistic, original, and aesthetically compelling approach, the films explore acceptance of others, cultural exchange, and living together—as well as the obstacles, prejudices, and tragedies that stand in the way.

A movie screening at the CGR-Le Colisée theater

Just as in 2023, when the screening on the theme “What’s Your Genre?” drew more than 120 people, this year’s selected short films will be screened on Thursday, March 28, at 8:00 p.m. at the CGR-Le Colisée movie theater in Carcassonne. This event, open to everyone at a flat rate of 5€, will be hosted by the students and staff who participated in the workshop throughout the year. They will present their selections and lead a discussion following the screening. Whether fiction, documentaries, or animated films, the eclectic works to be presented will all explore the richness of cultural diversity and living together.

The workshop and film screening are presented by the Art & Culture Department—Campus Life Division of the University of Montpellier, in partnership with the Faculty of Education, Les Amis du Cinoch’, and KOVisuel, and are co-funded by the CVEC (Student and Campus Life Contribution). This screening is part of the Week Against Racism and Antisemitism organized by the University of Montpellier from March 25 to 29, 2024.
