EcoN'UM: the University of Montpellier mobilizes for a more responsible digital future
From March 4 to 11, the University of Montpellier held its first EcoN'UM, a week-long event to raise awareness of the environmental impact of digital technology.

Throughout the week, students and staff were able to take part in a number of events designed to help them better understand the ecological challenges of digital technology. Among the highlights: the Fresque du Numérique (Digital Fresco) animations to decipher the global impact of digital technology, and a conference on artificial intelligence and the ecological transition given by Michel Robert, Director of CINES. And finally, to get all staff involved in a fun way, a "mailbox cleaning" challenge supervised by the IT and Digital Services Department (DSIN). The aim was to free up as much mailbox space as possible.
Over 1,200 people took part in the challenge, representing more than 8% of all UM mailbox holders. It freed up 1TB of the 44TB current volume of staff mailboxes. The three winners freed up to 90% of their mail space and were informed of their victory.
In addition to these actions, DSIN offered personalized assistance to help clean up mailboxes for a day, and made available various teaching aids to explore the subject in greater depth: podcasts, videos and infographics accessible online on the University's website. These resources remain available on the Responsible Digital page, to encourage more sustainable practices and offer the community a platform for reliable information on the ecological and responsible challenges of digital technology.
