"Camille" Exhibition: Art Meets Medicine
On the initiative of the health sciences student association “Montpellier Artistic Project” (MAP), whose goal is to foster cultural interest among students at the University of Montpellier, the installation “Camille” by Sète-based artist Sylvain Fraysse transforms the former dissection room of the Faculty of Medicine’s historic building (1957–2017) into a monumental and ephemeral work of art, exploring the evocative theme of anatomy, illustrated by the scene featuring Camille in Jean-Luc Godard’s film “Contempt.”
The exhibition runs from March 22 to April 18, 2023. The opening took place on March 21 in the presence of the artist, Philippe Augé, President of the University of Montpellier (UM), Isabelle Laffont, Dean of the Montpellier-Nîmes Faculty of Medicine, Amal Qobaa, Student Vice President of UM, Patricia Carette, President of the Occitanie Montpellier Regional Contemporary Art Fund (Frac OM), and Amance Lagrange, President of the student association “Montpellier Artistic Project (MAP).”
The result of close collaboration with the Occitanie Montpellier Regional Contemporary Art Fund (Frac OM), MAP carries on the historical legacy of the Faculty of Medicine, which has long been dedicated to art and humanism. This project also served as the catalyst for the renovation of this former dissection hall, whose 23 marble tables are listed as historic monuments. Opened to the general public for the first time with this exhibition, this room is set to become a new exhibition space within the future museum offerings of the historic campus of the University of Montpellier’s Faculty of Medicine.
