Launch of the Master in Wood Sciences

The first class of the Master's degree in Wood Sciences will start in September 2021 at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Montpellier, to train managers, engineers and future researchers who will drive development and innovation in forestry and wood industry companies and research laboratories.

This master's program is supported by MUSE as part of its program to support the creation of new Take 0ff #3 diplomas.

Training for professions that meet today's environmental challenges

Wood is covered from its formation in the tree to its uses as materials or molecules. Particular attention is paid to cross-disciplinary skills to ensure a global vision and understanding of the industry (upstream/downstream, resources, outlets and value-added), enabling the design of innovative and competitive wood products and services with a view to sustainable development. "Faced with climate and environmental challenges, we need to make a transition in our production and consumption patterns. What's true for energy and food is also true for materials. Wood is a clear answer to these major challenges, and its uses are set to grow significantly in the years to come," explains Bruno Clair, Director of Research at the CNRS and co-founder of the master's program.

An innovative approach to learning

The master's program is based on active teaching methods such as problem-based learning (PBL), company and laboratory case studies, a core project and the development of autonomy and personal projects. Sandrine Bardet, Senior Lecturer and co-founder of the program, explains: "We have designed this master's program to be interdisciplinary and based on active learning methods that develop each student's personal project in a spirit of cooperation ".

Internships and apprenticeships for hands-on immersion

The Master's degree is available through initial training or apprenticeship. For all students, the course begins with a week-long "It all starts in the forest" program, which immerses students in the world of wood through visits to forests accompanied by environmental experts and forestry professionals, and visits to companies.

Last but not least, students will complete a minimum 4-month internship each year, one in a company and one in academic research.

Applications will be open from March 15, 2021 to create a class of 20 students.
