The Montpellier Laboratory of Computer Science, Robotics, and Microelectronics (LIRMM) is celebrating 30 years of scientific research
On September 30, the Montpellier Laboratory of Computer Science, Robotics, and Microelectronics (LIRMM), affiliated with the University of Montpellier and the National Center for Research (CNRS), will celebrate its 30th anniversary in the presence of Philippe Augé, President of the University of Montpellier, Ali Charara, Director of the CNRS’s INS2I, and Jérôme Vitre, CNRS Regional Delegate. The LIRMM will also celebrate its 30 years of intensive scientific research with the general public during the Fête de la Science on October 8, 2022, by opening the doors of its laboratory to the public.
What is the LIRMM?
The LIRMM (Montpellier Laboratory of Computer Science, Robotics, and Microelectronics) is a Joint Research Unit Research UMR) primarily sponsored by the University of Montpellier (UM) and the National Center for Research (CNRS). The University of Perpignan (UPVD) and Paul-Valéry – Montpellier 3 (UPVM3) serve as secondary sponsors. The laboratory also benefits from strong partnerships with Inria. It brings together 160 researchers and Professors, including both male and female researchers and faculty members, approximately 40 administrative and technical staff, and just over 150 doctoral and postdoctoral students. It comprises three departments and 21 research teams. For 30 years, the LIRMM has been at the forefront of research in the fields of Computer Science, Robotics, and Microelectronics, developing new algorithms in AI and data science, new software, new robots, and the integrated circuits and embedded systems of tomorrow. With its ability to conduct top-tier fundamental research, develop interdisciplinary projects, and transfer its results to the socio-economic sector, LIRMM is a unique institution, and the commitment of all its members contributes to the international recognition of its research. The LIRMM is also a laboratory firmly committed to societal and environmental issues through the initiatives it undertakes, particularly in the areas of sustainable development, equality, and gender parity.
A day of celebration and presentations by the LIRMM on September 30
September 30 will mark the celebration of the LIRMM’s 30th anniversary. The goal of this event is to provide the broadest possible overview of all the research undertaken since the laboratory’s founding. Throughout the day, there will be several demonstrations by teams from each department (Computer Science, Robotics, Microelectronics). Daniel Andler, Professor Emeritus at Sorbonne University and researcher in the Department of Cognitive Studies at the École normale supérieure (PSL University), will speak on “AI: Breakneck Progress or Stagnation? It Depends on the Benchmark Chosen.”
The full schedule for September 30:
- 9:30–10:00 a.m.: Welcome and breakfast (Lobby of Building 2)
- 10:00–11:00 a.m.: Official Speeches (St. Priest Auditorium – Building 2)
- 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Presentation by Daniel Andler (Professor Emeritus at Sorbonne University, researcher in the Department of Cognitive Studies, École normale supérieure, PSL University) “AI: Breakneck Progress or Stagnation? It Depends on the Benchmark You Choose”
- 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Lunch (Tent, Building 3 parking lot)
- 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM: Lab tours, demonstrations, and poster presentations (Building 4 and the robotics hall in Building 5)
The LIRMM will open its doors to the general public on October 8 during Science Day!
To celebrate Science Day, the Montpellier Laboratory of Computer Science, Robotics, and Microelectronics will open its doors on October 8 to showcase some of the advancements in new technologies over the course of its 30-year history. The goal of this event is to introduce the general public to the digital world—from information to systems, from data to artificial intelligence, and from technology to people—all through various booths staffed by LIRMM teams who will showcase their laboratory’s different research areas.
