The Montpellier Laboratory of Computer Science, Robotics and Microelectronics (LIRMM) celebrates 30 years of scientific research

On September 30, the Montpellier Laboratory of Computer Science, Robotics, and Microelectronics (LIRMM), under the supervision of the University of Montpellier and the French National Center for Research (CNRS), will celebrate its 30th anniversary in the presence of Philippe Augé, President of the University of Montpellier, Ali Charara, Director of the CNRS's INS2I, and Jérôme Vitre, Regional Delegate of the CNRS. The LIRMM will also celebrate its 30 years of intensive scientific research with the general public during the Fête de la Science on October 8, 2022, by opening the doors of its laboratory to the public.

What is LIRMM?

The LIRMM (Laboratory of Computer Science, Robotics, and Microelectronics of Montpellier) is a Joint Research Unit Research UMR) whose main supervisory bodies are the University of Montpellier (UM) and the National Center for Research (CNRS). The University of Perpignan (UPVD) and Paul-Valéry University – Montpellier 3 (UPVM3) are secondary sponsors. The laboratory also benefits from rich partnerships with Inria. It brings together 160 researchers and Professors, researchers and teacher-researchers, around 40 administrative and technical staff, and just over 150 doctoral and post-doctoral students. It comprises three departments and 21 research teams. For 30 years, LIRMM has been at the forefront of research in the fields of computer science, robotics, and microelectronics, designing new algorithms in AI and data science, new software, new robots, and even the integrated circuits and embedded systems of tomorrow. With its ability to conduct high-level fundamental research, develop interdisciplinary projects, and transfer its results to the socio-economic world, LIRMM is a unique place, and the commitment of all its members contributes to the international recognition of its research. LIRMM is also a laboratory that is firmly committed to societal and environmental issues through the actions it carries out, particularly in the areas of sustainable development, equality, and gender parity.

A day of celebration and presentation of LIRMM on September 30

September 30 will be a day of celebration marking 30 years of LIRMM. The aim of this day will be to present as broad an overview as possible of all the research undertaken since the laboratory was founded. During the day, there will be several demonstrations by teams from each department (IT, Robotics, Microelectronics). Daniel Andler, Professor Emeritus at Sorbonne University and researcher at the Department of Cognitive Studies at the École Normale Supérieure (PSL University), will speak on "AI: rapid progress or stagnation? It depends on the benchmark chosen."

The full program for September 30:

  • 9:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.: Welcome breakfast (Hall of Building 2)
  • 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.: Official speeches (St Priest Lecture Hall – Building 2)
  • 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Presentation by Daniel Andler (Professor Emeritus at Sorbonne University, researcher at the Department of Cognitive Studies, École normale supérieure, PSL University) “AI: rapid progress or stagnation? It depends on the benchmark chosen.”
  • 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.: Lunch (Marquee, parking lot of Building 3)
  • 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.: Laboratory tours, demonstrations, and posters (Building 4 and robotics hall in Building 5)

The LIRMM will open its doors to the general public on October 8 during the Fête de la Science (Science Festival)!

On the occasion of Science Day, the Montpellier Laboratory of Computer Science, Robotics, and Microelectronics will open its doors on October 8 to showcase some of the technological advances made over its 30 years of existence. The aim of this day will be to introduce the general public to the digital world, from information to systems, data to artificial intelligence, technology to humans, all thanks to the various stands run by the LIRMM teams, who will present the different areas of research carried out by their laboratory.
