[LUM#1] Lengguru, paradise lost

It is one of the last unexplored territories on the planet. Located in West Papua, this vast mountain range, twice the size of Corsica, isolated and wild, is teeming with unknown species. A real treasure trove for naturalists...

For the Lengguru scientific expedition, dozens of scientists braved these impenetrable primary forests to discover an exceptionally rich variety of flora and fauna, on land, under the sea, and even in underground rivers.

"An extraordinary, mysterious, and captivating environment," says Laurent Pouyaud of the Institute of Evolutionary Sciences in Montpellier. The researcher, who specializes in fish, took part in this extraordinary mission, which revealed some of the secrets of this lost paradise. The goal: "to study the interactions between all these species in order to understand this unknown ecosystem." To better protect it.

The Lengguru scientific expedition is organized by the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), the Cibinong Biology Research Center (RCB-LIPI), and the Sorong Polytechnic School (POLTEK). www.lengguru.org
