Lengguru, a lost world

From March 14 to March 31, 2016, the University of Montpellier is hosting the exhibition “Lengguru, a Lost World” in the lobby of the University Sports Center. This is an opportunity for the general public to see, through photographs, the initial findings of the largest scientific expedition ever conducted in Indonesia.

We’ve scheduled an extraordinary meeting with the IRD scientists coordinating the expedition. This is one of the last unexplored regions on Earth. Located in West Papua, this vast mountain range—twice the size of Corsica—is isolated and untamed, teeming with unknown species. A true treasure trove for naturalists…

An extraordinary scientific and human adventure

For the Lengguru scientific expedition in late 2014, more than seventy scientists—ichthyologists, marine biologists, hydrologists, botanists, ornithologists, entomologists, and herpetologists—braved these impenetrable primary forests to discover an exceptionally rich array of flora and fauna, on land, under the sea, and even in underground rivers. The results are impressive, with the discovery of some fifty species that were likely unknown until now.
