Les Rendez-vous de l’Eco: A lecture on the topic “Energy Transition: How Citizens Can Take Action” at the School of Economics
As part of the “Rendez-vous de l’Eco” series, the Faculty of Economics at the University of Montpellier, in partnership with Midi Libre, is organizing a conference on the topic: “Energy Transition: How Citizens Can Take Action” on February 8, 2023, starting at 6:00 p.m., at the Faculty of Economics’ Richter Campus.
Why this conference?
The acceleration of climate change and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need to drastically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. To begin reducing emissions and meet our climate commitments, the energy sector must undergo a profound transformation, with the ultimate goal of achieving an economy that is completely independent of fossil fuels. One of the drivers of this energy transition is the development of renewable energy, whose share of the energy mix is set to grow significantly in the coming years, as evidenced by the forward-looking studies conducted by the electricity transmission system operator RTE, where, in the baseline scenario, solar and wind capacity will need to increase by a factor of 11 and 3, respectively.
This will require rethinking the approaches to developing these energy sources that have been followed to date and involving local communities and citizens—who have a fundamental role to play—more broadly. In this conference, our three speakers will discuss the key strategies for achieving this energy transition, with a focus on actions that citizens can take.
