Les Rendez-vous de l’Eco: A roundtable discussion on the topic “Energy Prices” at the School of Economics
As part of the “Rendez-vous de l’Eco” series, the Faculty of Economics at the University of Montpellier, in partnership with Midi Libre, is organizing a roundtable discussion on the topic “Energy Prices” on November 21, 2022, starting at 6:30 p.m., at the Faculty of Economics’ Richter Campus.
Why this roundtable discussion?
“For several months now, soaring energy prices have been shaking up economies and having a significant impact on businesses and individuals. The cyclical causes are well established: the crisis in Ukraine, low availability of nuclear reactors in France, low water levels in reservoirs, and issues surrounding renewable energy… All these factors are highlighted in public debates and fuel concerns about the economic situation of countries and, in particular, about the risk of perpetuating inflationary pressures. Alongside these cyclical causes, this strong pressure on energy prices also stems from more structural causes linked to the transformations of the electricity and gas markets in Europe since the 2000s. The purpose of the roundtable will be to better understand the organization of energy markets and the positioning of the various players (incumbent players, alternative suppliers, renewable electricity producers, etc.), to clarify the origins of this surge in energy prices, to assess the impacts on the economy, and to shed light on possible ways to protect economic actors and individuals.”
