Tom DO VAN LANH // Fun tutorials for better nutrition

Tom DO VAN LANH – 22 years old – Born in Paris (Val-de-Marne, 94) – Living in Montpellier since 2015 – Currently studying for a Professional Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition and Human Nutrition atthe Montpellier-Sète University Institute of Technology (IUT)

“I want to work in nutrition in developing countries.”

[ Can you introduce yourself in a few words? ] – My name is Tom Do Van Lanh, I was born in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges in the 94 department, near Paris. I came to Montpellier to do this course because I want to work in nutrition in developing countries later on, which is a special feature of this course that is not offered elsewhere.

“I love food more than anything! Preparing, cooking, and above all, tasting!”

[ What are your passions? Your hobbies? ] – I have many! I love sports, especially track and field, which I practice at the MA2M – Montpellier Athletic Méditerranée Métropole. I do short sprints. I love the feeling this sport gives me, and it helps me relax after class. I enjoy reading manga and watching Japanese anime. It was thanks to my older brother that I got into these books. And of course, in line with my training, I love food above all else! Preparing, cooking, and above all, tasting!

“Continuing my education, which allows me to expand my skills.”

[ Your studies? ] – I'm currently studying for a professional degree in Nutrition and Human Food at theMontpellier University Institute of Technology. Before that, I studied for a BTS (advanced vocational diploma) in Dietetics in the Paris region before starting the professional degree (you can also get in through a DUT (university technical diploma) in Bioengineering with a Dietetics option). It's a continuation of my training and allows me to broaden my skills in the areas of management, clinical research, food education, prevention, etc.

“With Blabla’plat, I offer tutorials on sustainable eating.”

[ To help students with their daily nutrition, you participated in the Blabla’plat project. Blablawhat? ] – Blabla’plat is a series of videos made by students on our course. It helps students with their daily diet by focusing on four themes that we have chosen:

> comparison of industrial meals and home-cooked meals,
> cooking with leftovers,
> using the microwave
> cooking with fruit and vegetables.

These videos were created as part of an intervention research project on the topic of "sustainable food", supervised by Ms. Virginie Masdoua, our project tutor. It was funded by the French Fund for Healthy Food and supported by various partners including the DRAAF, the ARS Languedoc-Roussillon, and the University Service for Preventive Medicine and Health Promotion.

“When it comes to nutrition, breakfast is a must!”

[ What is your typical day like? ] – Morning wake-up call and breakfast (especially as a dietician, you can't skip it!): fruit juice, yogurt, and slices of fresh bread with jam.
A dynamic start in the starting blocks on my bike to catch the tram, then off to a day of intense classes. At noon, I have a quick lunch at the IUT cafeteria, then at the end of classes at 6 p.m., three times a week, I go to the Phillipidès Stadium for a track and field (and lactate) session...
In the evening, I come back, eat a nice warm meal in front of a good TV series, and of course, I work!

“The university library… DVDs of recent movies and TV series that you can borrow, and I'm all for that.”

[ Your favorite place at the university? ] – The library on the Triolet campus. It's a large space with lots of bibliographic resources and even DVDs of recent movies and TV series that you can borrow, which I really like!

“The Jardin des Plantes, one of the most beautiful places, especially when the sun comes out.”

[ Your favorite place in Montpellier? ] – The botanical garden on Boulevard Henri IV, one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever visited, very pleasant, especially when the sun comes out, with many varieties of plants that I was not necessarily familiar with.
