ISEM and the University of Montpellier in "The Animal Odyssey" on Arte

From Monday, September 26, through Friday, September 30, the ARTE channel will air the documentary series “The Animal Odyssey,” filmed with doctoral researchers and senior scientists from ISEM. Tune in every weeknight at 7 p.m. so you don’t miss any of the five episodes filmed in the Amazon, in Occitanie, and on the Triolet Campus of the University of Montpellier.

What is this documentary series about?

The North American bear, the Eurasian horse, the Australian kangaroo, the South American monkey, and the African elephant—each of the five episodes of the series *Animal Odyssey* will explore the incredible transformations and extraordinary journeys of these five species, which have become emblems of their respective continents. Their story begins 66 million years ago, when several global events led to the near-total extinction of the dinosaurs. This marks the beginning of a new era—the rise of mammals—which The Animal Odyssey chronicles.

ISEM at a glance:

The Montpellier Institute of Evolutionary Sciences (ISEM) is a research laboratory that conducts research on the origin and dynamics of biodiversity, as well as on the processes and mechanisms of its evolution. It is affiliated with the University of Montpellier (UM), the CNRS (National Center for Research ), the IRD ( Research Institute Research Development), the CIRAD (Center for International Cooperation in Research for Development), the INRAP (National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research), and the EPHE (School for Advanced Studies in the Humanities). ISEM researchers work on both current and past biodiversity, focusing on a wide range of organisms and environments by combining field, experimental, and theoretical approaches. This area of basic research is linked to applied and predictive research addressing a major scientific and societal question of the 21st century, in interaction with the humanities, medicine, and society: what are the adaptive capacities of biodiversity in the face of global changes?
