The University of Montpellier is up and running!

Officially launched on January1, 2015, the University of Montpellier is the result of a merger between Montpellier 1 and Montpellier 2 Universities.
The creation of France'ssixth largest university marks the culmination of a merger process that began in September 2012. Conducted internally, this process mobilized nearly 300 staff members from both universities, who worked together for more than two years to bring it to fruition. The merger of the two universities was based on the existence of many shared areas in the fields of research and education.
The University of Montpellier aims to meet the three objectives set out by its president, Philippe Augé"clarity, simplicity, efficiency" – by bringing together 41,000 students and 72 research structures. Multidisciplinary, open to its environment and the world, focused on the professionalization of its students and the pursuit of excellence, UM is now a key player in higher education and research in the south of France.

The logo of the University of Montpellier

It is inspired by the emblem of the Guilhem dynasty, founders of the city of Montpellier. In 1181, Guilhem VIII granted the city a right that would change its destiny: the freedom to teach medicine. From then on, university education was established and scientific and economic life developed around the university.
The University of Montpellier logo draws on the heritage of this founding dynasty. It symbolizes the sharing of a history and heritage inherited by the entire university community. Its shape, reminiscent of a seal or a revisited emblem, highlights the historical roots of an 800-year-old university as well as its modernity (crenellated exterior).
The interior elements illustrate interdisciplinarity and influence. Finally, the color red is intended to appeal to students, so that they can more easily embrace the new "University of Montpellier" label.
