The University of Montpellier is launched!

Officially launched on January1, 2015, the University of Montpellier is the result of the merger between the Universities of Montpellier 1 and Montpellier 2.
The creation of France's 6th largest university marks the culmination of a merger process that began in September 2012. Carried out in-house, this process involved almost 300 staff from both universities, who worked together on its construction for over two years. The merger of the two universities was based on the existence of numerous shared sectors in the fields of research and education.
The University of Montpellier aims to meet the three objectives set out by its president, Philippe Augé - "clarity, simplicity, efficiency" - by bringing together 41,000 students and 72 research structures. Multi-disciplinary, open to its environment and the world, focused on the professionalization of its students and research excellence, the UM is today a key player in higher education and research in the south of France.

The University of Montpellier logo

It was inspired by the emblem of the Guilhem dynasty, founders of the city of Montpellier. In 1181, Guilhem VIII granted the city a right that would influence its destiny: the freedom to teach medicine. From then on, university teaching was established and scientific and economic life developed around the university.
The logo of the University of Montpellier is based on the heritage of this founding dynasty. It symbolizes the shared history and heritage of the entire university community. Its shape, reminiscent of a seal or a revisited emblem, underlines the historical roots of an 8-century-old university as much as its modernity (crenellated exterior).
The interior elements illustrate interdisciplinarity and outreach. Finally, the color red is intended to appeal to students, making it easier for them to identify with the new "Université de Montpellier" label.
