The University of Montpellier, ranked first among French universities in the 2024 "Times Higher Education Impact Rankings"

The University of Montpellier has reaffirmed its standing in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. In itssixth edition, the university retains its top spot among French universities and ranks among the world’s top 101–200 institutions in the overall rankings, thanks to its longstanding commitment to sustainable development. It remains in the global top 50 in two subject areas and climbs into the global top 80 in two others, all of which are linked to the institution’s key priorities: feeding, healing, and protecting.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings is an international ranking designed to measure higher education institutions’ commitment to and performance in sustainable development. This innovative ranking goes beyond traditional metrics based on research or teaching quality, adopting a different, more societal approach. It is based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015. Since the ranking’s inception in 2019, the University of Montpellier has participated every year, thereby highlighting its commitment to sustainable development and social responsibility.

Philippe Augé, president of the University of Montpellier, is pleased with the University of Montpellier’s ranking. A ranking that “recognizes the entire university community for its strong commitment to integrating social responsibility and sustainable development into all its activities.”

UM: A Success Story in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals

With its overall score continuing to rise, the University of Montpellier (UM) has once again cemented its position as the top French university in the 2024 THE Impact Rankings, placing among the top 101–200 institutions worldwide out of more than 1,900 ranked universities.

The University of Montpellier stands out for its consistently improving performance. In this ranking, UM once again excels in the “Health and Well-being” SDG, ranking30th globally andfirst in France. UM has also improved its ranking in the “Life Below Water” SDG, again securing30th place globally and1st place nationally—further proof of UM’s excellence in the field of ecology. Finally, the University of Montpellier ranks77th globally in the SDGs “decent work and economic growth,” as well as67th in the SDG “reduced inequalities,” demonstrating its full commitment to social responsibility.
