Montpellier University confirms its scientific influence in the Leiden 2024 world rankings
The University of Montpellier has once again been ranked highly in the CWTS Leiden Ranking, coming in4th nationally and203rd globally. The Leiden Ranking provides important information on the scientific performance of more than 1,500 leading universities around the world. It provides a clear perspective on the volume and impact of our researchers' scientific output by looking at the number of publications in scientific journals and their citations by other national and international scientists.
Montpellier University ranks among the top 10 nationally...
Nationally, the University of Montpellier ranksfourth in terms oftotal volume of scientific publications andfourth in terms of the top 10% most cited publications (the "Top 10%"). Based on this criterion, the University of Montpellier ranks as thetop university outside of Paris, ahead of other major universities such as Aix-Marseille and Grenoble. This remarkable national ranking is reflected internationally, as the University of Montpellier ranks203rd worldwide.
Last year, the University of Montpellier confirmed its rise to the top 200 best universities in the world according to the Shanghai ranking. Today, this progress is also reflected in the Leiden ranking, illustrating the UM's steady improvement in international rankings. This success is the result of collective work carried out at the Montpellier site, aimed at increasing recognition of the scientific excellence of our researchers. We remain firmly committed to further strengthening the global reach of our research," said Philippe Augé, President of the University of Montpellier.
A multidimensional approach
Created in 2011, the ranking produced by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University measures the scientific reputation of institutions and their collaboration in research. The 2023 ranking lists more than 1,500 institutions and covers five disciplinary fields: medicine, physics, life and earth sciences, mathematics, and humanities and social sciences.
The Leiden ranking is based on scientific publications, particularly articles published in scientific journals, which enable it to select sophisticated bibliometric indicators in order to generate results and analyze university rankings according to one or more selected indicators. It is also based on publications referenced in the Web of Science database produced by Clarivate Analytics.
The Leiden ranking offers a multidimensional approach to university performance. For each combination of a university, a main field, and a period, the ranking provides values for 50 indicators across four main types of information: the number of publications and the degree to which these publications are cited by other works, the degree of collaboration between different universities, open access to publications, and the gender of authors. The Leiden ranking "aims to promote a more responsible approach to university rankings." It provides information exclusively on research conducted at universities, research that is represented in scientific publications and carefully collected data, which form the basis and independence of this ranking.
