The University of Montpellier and the National Police Are Strengthening Their Partnership to Ensure Campus Safety
On Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the Montpellier Institute of Botany, the University of Montpellier and the Hérault Interdepartmental Directorate of the National Police signed a framework partnership agreement in the presence of Philippe Augé, president of the University of Montpellier, and François Bargel, deputy interdepartmental director of the Hérault National Police. This agreement aims to strengthen joint efforts in the areas of prevention, security, and awareness-raising for the benefit of the entire university community.

Strengthened Cooperation to Promote Safety and Prevention
Building on a partnership that began in 2013 and was renewed in 2017, this new agreement formalizes enhanced cooperation between the University of Montpellier and the National Police. It addresses the specific challenges associated with the presence of more than 55,000 students across the entire university campus. The agreement is based on several key areas. In particular, it provides for the development of prevention and training initiatives for students and staff, covering topics such as violence and discrimination, risky behavior, cybercrime, and road safety. Special attention is given to supporting student events, with awareness-raising activities and training for organizers on safety issues.
The partnership also aims to enhance security on campuses and in their surrounding areas by identifying high-risk areas, implementing appropriate surveillance measures, and, if necessary, increasing the presence of law enforcement during specific periods or events. Special attention will be given to promoting and raising awareness of the National Police’s operational reserve among students and staff at the University of Montpellier.
Finally, plans call for enhanced coordination between the University’s departments and those of the National Police, including the appointment of dedicated liaisons, the establishment of structured communication channels, and a shared monitoring system to improve responsiveness to incidents. Signed for a term of three years, this agreement reflects a shared commitment to ensuring a safe university environment that respects academic freedom and fosters the success of students and staff.
