The University of Montpellier inaugurates the new School of Geriatrics and Gerontology in the Faculty of Medicine, an event accompanied by the opening of the "Old and Beautiful" exhibition.

From the start of the 2022 academic year, the School of Geriatrics and Gerontology at the Faculty of Medicine will be welcoming students to the 19 courses it offers. To mark the launch of this new School, an inauguration evening will be held in the Historical Building of the Montpellier-Nîmes Faculty of Medicine on Wednesday June 1, 2022, with the opening of the "Old and Beautiful" exhibition, in the presence of Isabelle Laffont, Dean of the Montpellier-Nîmes Faculty of Medicine, and Claude Jeandel, Director of the School of Geriatrics and Gerontology.

What is the School of Geriatrics and Gerontology?

A product of the IDEFI-TIL program (Initiatives d'Excellence en Formations innovantes - Trans Innov Longévité) initiated at the Faculty in 2014, the Faculty of Medicine's gerontology courses have already enabled many medical and paramedical professionals to specialize in this sector. Since 2006, nearly 450 students have graduated from our gerontology masters programs.

The School currently offers 19 courses, including 2 masters, 9 university diplomas and 8 short courses, delivered in the form of hybrid teaching.

To offer a cross-disciplinary, holistic approach to the problems of old age, the School draws on innovative teaching methods in a variety of fields, including medical, epidemiological, psychological and legal.

The teaching unit, which currently centralizes all these training courses, will be supplemented by three other units: a new teaching unit for doctors and medical students, a unit for "family caregivers", aimed at the relatives of elderly people losing their autonomy, and a "therapeutic education" unit for patients.

An exhibition to accompany the inauguration

In the heart of the Faculty of Medicine's historic building, the inauguration of the School of Geriatrics and Gerontology will be accompanied by the opening of the "Old and Beautiful" exhibition. The choice of this exhibition makes perfect sense, as it has been coordinated by Elsa Hersog, director of the Maison de Retraite Protestante, a partner of the Masters in Gerontology.

Initially made up of 84 photographic portraits of EHPAD residents, the Cour d'Honneur will host more than 50, selected just for the occasion. Directed and photographed by William Moureaux, this project "was an opportunity to showcase the beauty of faces that have a history, and that retrace a whole life".

Focus on the artist :

A professional for almost 15 years, William Moureaux is passionate about photography. He chose to train with the best international photographers specializing in portraiture. To date, he is the only Frenchman to have been awarded the 2 highest distinctions in European photography: European Master of Photography in 2017 and Meilleur Ouvrier de France in 2019.
