Université de Montpellier well placed in QS World University Rankings 2024
The University of Montpellier confirms its high ranking in the QS World University Rankings. In its 15th edition, it maintains its status as one of the world's and France's leading universities. It is the French institution that has made the most progress this year in the "environmental sciences" discipline.
QS World University Rankings, created in 2004, is one of the world's most reputed rankings for higher education and research. It places great emphasis on reputation surveys, which account for 50% of the evaluation. This year, 171 of the world's 1,700 leading universities in some 100 countries are ranked according to 55 thematic categories, all grouped into five areas.

A favorable ranking for France and particularly for UM
A total of 80 French universities or schools appear in these rankings (7 more than in 2024), putting France in fourth place worldwide behind the USA, China and the UK. At European level, France ranks3rd, again in terms of the total number of institutions ranked.
The University of Montpellier is the French institution that has made the most progress this year, moving up from 151st to 119th place in the Environmental Sciences ranking "thanks to significant gains in terms of academic reputation and reputation with employers", the British company also points out. The UM appears 22 times in this year's ranking, compared with 18 times in 2024, confirming its progress year after year.
The University of Montpellier has also distinguished itself in a number of international rankings.
The UM is also ranked among the top 200 universities in the world in the Shanghai ranking, which covers several themes, as well as in THE Ranking Impact, which measures the commitment and performance of higher education establishments in terms of sustainable development. In its 6th edition, the UM maintains its top position among French institutions, and is ranked among the world's top 101-200 institutions for its long-standing commitment to sustainable development. This year, the UM is in the world's top 50 for 2 objectives, in line with the establishment's major themes: nourish, care for and protect. In fact, UM stands out for the sustainable development objective (SDO) "health and well-being", occupying 30th place worldwide and1st place in France. In addition, the UM has made significant progress on the "aquatic life" SDG, ranking 30th worldwide and 1st in France, once again demonstrating the UM's excellence in the field of ecology.
Finally, the University of Montpellier maintains its status in the CWTS Leiden Ranking. This ranking, which provides important information on the scientific performance of over 1,500 major universities worldwide, is based on scientific publications and their citations. In the 2024 world ranking, the University of Montpellier once again confirms its scientific influence at both national and international level, with a4th place in France (first provincial university) and a 203rd place worldwide.
According to the Reuters ranking of the most innovative universities, the University of Montpellier ranks second in France and 17th in Europe.
