New service for the Science Bar

A flagship event in Montpellier's scientific culture, the Bar des Sciences, organized by the University of Montpellier's scientific culture department, is back for a new season. The first participatory debate will take place on January 25 at 8:30 p.m. at the Le Dôme brasserie. The theme of the evening? "Should we be afraid of artificial intelligence?" The rest of the season will follow each month...

Regulars are now familiar with the concept: from January to June, the University of Montpellier hosts a monthly participatory public debate where scientists from all disciplines come to engage with the audience. Admission is free, and the event takes place in the welcoming setting of Le Dôme brasserie, which has been a key partner of this event for many years. After a year marked by the emergence of ChatGPT in 2023, the first event of the season, which will take place on Thursday, January 25 at 8:30 p.m., offers a hot topic: "Should we be afraid of artificial intelligence?

Season launch

Just like the steam engine and electricity in the past, artificial intelligence is transforming our world and society, making it one of the most strategic technologies of the 21st century. Consumer giants and manufacturers of tech products, household appliances, and cars are systematically incorporating AI into their products. It is at the heart of the medicine of the future, industry, banking and insurance, defense, and aeronautics. As for the arrival of generative AI, it is revolutionizing our relationship with machines and fueling an endless debate between technophiles and technophobes.

So should we fear AI or, on the contrary, welcome it? To answer this question, four experts will engage in a dialogue with the audience:

The season is co-produced by the UM's scientific culture departments and its partners: INRAE, INSERM, and IRD.
This event is part of the Halles de l'IA program.
