UM atUM [S01-ep11]: From Populism to Masculinity at the Science Bar

This week, Alexandre Dézé and Emmanuelle Reungoat, political science researchers at Cepel and authors of the book *Au nom du peuple* (*In the Name of the People*), debunk common assumptions about populism. In the second half of the program, we’ll take a closer look at the upcoming Science Bar and its theme:“What is masculinity?”

French citizens, my dear compatriots in mainland France, overseas territories, and abroad, good morning and welcome to A LUM LA SCIENCE, the weekly program that brings you the latest scientific news from the laboratories at Muse, Montpellier University of Excellence.

As we begin 2022, I would first like to extend my best wishes to you all and assure you that, as president, I will do everything in my power to ensure that these wishes do not come true. With me, no more empty promises; with me,“Anything is possible!”

Want to be healthy? I guarantee the immediate eradication of COVID, cancer, and eczema—no matter the cost.

Do you want security? I will demand that the borders be closed after 1 a.m., that the checkpoints be removed, and that the French non-vaccination passport be abolished.

Do you want happiness and love? I’ll ban sadness and reopen nightclubs, churches, and gatherings as soon as possible—no hand sanitizer, no masks, no shirts, and no pants.

Do you want money? I promise to bridge the social divide by raising wages by at least 50% and reducing labor costs by at least that much. I will also eliminate the wealth tax and the unemployment tax.

Want to go green? I’ll declare war on global warming and freeze our relationship with thermometers—because change is happening now!

Do you want to…

  • Populist!
  • What? What do you mean, populist? I couldn't care less about populists! Do you even know what populism is, for starters?
  • No

That’s perfect timing, because our guests know exactly what it is. Last November, they published a book titled*Au nom du peuple* (*Inthe Name of the People* ), in which they address all the common misconceptions about populism in an effort to better explain a concept that is increasingly being used as a catch-all term. Joining us in the studio are Alexandre Dézé and Emmanuelle Reungoat.
