Science at UM [S02-ep08]: From the Human at Home Project to Sud de Sciences
This week on *A l’UM la science*, Anne-Sophie Cases, coordinator of the interdisciplinary HUT project (Human at Home), gives us an overview of four years of experimentation. The segment takes us backstage at HUT Théâtre, and Agnès Pesenti, head of science communication, talks to us about the Festival Sud de Sciences.

Our most loyal listeners may remember: almost two years ago, on a previous episode, we told you about the “Human at Home” project. It was a unique experiment, the only one of its kind in the world, conducted right in the heart of Montpellier. The goal? To test out the home of the future—or rather, the kind of home we wouldn’t want to live in in the future.
Every year since October 2018, two student volunteers have moved into a so-called “smart” apartment to live there as normally as possible, while behind the scenes, a consortium of researchers has been working to collect as much data as possible from the sensors installed throughout the apartment: environmental sensors to measure humidity, temperature, and pollution; light and comfort sensors; home automation with a voice assistant; connected devices of all kinds; floor sensors to analyze gait and potential musculoskeletal disorders; and language analysis… Throughout these four years, 13 research laboratories from the University of Montpellier and Paul Valery University worked on this program alongside the École des Mines d’Alès and the School of Architecture.
Far from being merely a technological experiment, Human at Home (HUT) has taken on a human challenge over the past four years. The team presented their findings at a major conference. Our guest is Anne-Sophie Cases, who has served as the HUT project coordinator since January 2020 and is a researcher at the MRM Laboratory in digital marketing.
For once, the second half of our show will air first, as this week’s feature is an excerpt from the play *HUT Théâtre*, which our guest will also be discussing.
Finally, our guest for the last three minutes will be Agnès Pesenti, head of science communication at the University of Montpellier. She’ll be talking to us about the Sud de Sciences science film festival, which kicks off on November 23.
